Autoimmune

This post is for my silent suffers, my invisible suffers, my silent warriors. Many people may not know or are unaware but autoimmune basically means when your very own body immune system attacks health cells. The first time my own body’s immune system attacked me was in 2014. I knew something was wrong because to me my eyes were turning yellow. That was my only symptom and warning. I tried asking family and co-workers did they think my eyes looked yellow, but they all said “not really, maybe it’s the lightening” that did not sit well with me, because I have sickle cell disease and Jaundice is a very common effect of Sickle Cell Disease I thought it could be that. I have never had Jaundice but I am aware of it as a common symptom.

I went to my regular doctor and got a blood test, you know the blood tells all the body’s hidden secrets. Results revealed my liver enzymes were way higher than the normal limits. For the record I do not drink alcohol, smoke, or never done any recreational drugs. I won’t go into liver break downs but liver has two main components AST and ALT, anyone of these being elevated equals liver disease leading to fatal body failure or disease.

I had to do further test mainly a liver biopsy in short getting a sample of my liver. If you know where the liver is you will know it’s not easy to get to it. I was awake and took five extremely long needles to get through my back, bypass my ribs to get a slice. Long story short, results indicated I have Autoimmune Hepatitis – in the doctor’s words “this means your body is rejecting your liver so you immune system is attacking it as being foreign”. I just entered my fabulous forties well reserved and well traveled body to be told my body didn’t like my liver.

I AM a Autoimmune Warrior…but I can’t fight this alone. Please wear a mask.

Quick lesson about autoimmune diseases and COVID-19. Auto-Immune disease causes the white blood cells that normally protect your body from invaders to turn around and attack your cells, tissues and organs. Chronic fatigue is another symptom. It is not a cold or the flu, you will never get better, and even a nap will not help. Just eating a salad and hitting the gym won’t slim your face or get the pounds off. Sleeping 10 hours doesn’t leave you well rested, ever. The last minute changes in plans because that “just got ran over” feeling never makes appointments, it just walks in whenever you aren’t ready. Painful joints, muscles and bones, dry skin, breaking hair, hair loss, mood swings, and depression are just the tip of the iceberg.

You are also prone to having multiple autoimmune diseases, they typically come in pairs of two. You easily catch viral and bacterial infections. You have days where no matter how hard you try, you just can’t smile for anyone.

I urge you to think twice before passing judgment and thinking our nation is overreacting to the extra measures being taken to curb the spread of this virus. YOU might be able to recover from it no problem however, carry it to SOMEONE WITH AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE and that individual won’t be as lucky.

I am watching the ones who will take the time to read this entire post and react.
